Syracuse is one of the most beautiful cities in Sicily and was once the most important city in Western Europe. It was founded by Greek settlers around 733 BC, when Sicily became part of Magna Graecia, spreading Greek culture across the Mediterranean.
Ortigia, the historic centre of Syracuse, is a small island connected to the mainland by a short bridge. It is the heart of the city, where the Greeks first settled. Today it has been beautifully restored and attracts many visitors.
At the centre of Ortigia is Piazza Duomo, home to the impressive Duomo of Syracuse. Originally built as the Temple of Athena, it was later transformed into a Christian church and rebuilt with a Sicilian Baroque façade after the 1693 earthquake, combining several architectural styles.
Just 45 minutes from Pozzallo, the charming fishing village of Marzamemi is known for its colourful houses, traditional boats, and the historic Tonnara, an old tuna processing plant built by the Arabs in the 10th century. The lively Piazza Regina Margherita is the heart of the village, full of colour and local Sicilian flavours.
